A very Very good game REmake
My first thought on Resident Evil 4 remake wouldn't be as good as the original, like RE4 on the PS2, which is a good game. However, I just beat the game last week, and I will say that the remake is good with fewer of the annoying parts.
Before I discuss the RE4 Remake, I will briefly talk about how Capcom had an odd period in the early 2000s and how RE4 truly got out of there, Nostalgia funk, and made a game for the next generation of Horror games.
The New Millennium 2000
When Capcom entered the year 2000, following their success with their trilogy on the PlayStation. The first release for a next-gen title was Code Veronica on the Dreamcast and later on the PS2.
Code Veronica had the same gameplay formula as the Previous titles, at least it had a 3D background that looked more real than its PS1 counterpart with still images.
First Person Arcade style RE games 2000-2001
After Code Veronica, Capcom again released another RE title as a first-person shooter called Resident Evil Survivor on the old PS1, 6 months later, on August 30, 2000.
It wasn't a good game due to its controls and how the Guncon was not compatible with the game. Meaning it was only playable as a bad FPS game. Well, 17 years later, they did come back to that idea on Resident Evil 7, and it became Gold.
Capcom did the same thing, but for the arcades in 2001, called Resident Evil Survivor 2 Code: Veronica. It was also released for the PS2, but only available in the PAL regions lol.
I have played this on the PCSX2 emulator, and the gameplay isn't that great tbh. However, it was popular as an arcade game in Japan.
The GameCube ERA For Resident Evil 2002-2005
I would pretty much say that Nintendo had a good deal with the RE Brand with Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil Zero on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, followed by Gamecube ports of RE2/RE3 in 2003 and the announcement of Resident Evil 4 coming to the GameCube as an exclusive for 2004 but delay to 2005, there was hope still juice left in the RE name.
Two More Odd Games 2003-2004
Just like Survivor and its arcade counterpart, they did it again with Resident Evil: Dead Aim on the PS2 release in 2003. And yes, it has good graphics, but the gameplay is again not great due to its tank control in a 3D environment with a light gun interface.
And with even more juice in the name of RE, they did it online on the PS2 called Outbreak Files in 2004. To say this shortly, it has a good story during the events of RE2 and RE3. The ending is good. The characters are good too. But for the gameplay itself, fans had said that this does kinda work even when it's hot modded in the year 2026, fans still play this game to this very day lol.
Development Of Resident Evil 4 1999-2004
Early development of RE4 was a very, very long one. Starting from 1999, with Hideki Kamiya, which ended with the Devil May Cry game.
According to Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Resident Evil 4 was almost going to be an N64 game lol. I have heard for years that Resident Evil Zero was for the N64, until all development shifted to the GameCube.
Imagine RE4 on the N64 lol.
And then in 2002-2003, with the idea of a psychological horror with Ghost enemies. Even with the idea of ghosts and these psychological horror aspects in the game, the GameCube hardware wasn't powerful enough to get through these concepts, so they were pretty much scrapped altogether. When Mikami took over, they had a clear concept of how the game was going to be, and they were all in for that Idea.
You can learn more from this interview; it's really, really fascinating. Someone archive this xoxo.
Resident Evil 4 was released on GameCube in 2005 and then on the PS2 later that year. Soon after, it is released to every single damn thing on the planet.
Mini History Example on 3d Worlds
Super Mario 64 was the first 3D game in 1996, and yes, GTA3 was kinda the first game to feature a third-person view featuring a livable world. Third-person world games were a thing with action games for most of the early 2000s.
RE4 help define the Third-Person Over The Shoulder Shooters
The original RE4 2005 version is the game that put the Stamp of approval as a third-person over-the-shoulder action survival horror game. Despite having tank-like control in a 3D environment, you can slightly tilt left to right on the right analog stick.
RE4 is considered to be the first game to have an over-the-shoulder view. Afterwards, games like GTA4, Gears of War, Uncharted 4, and so on took this a new form of gameplay.
RE4 2005 gameplay
RE4 With its quick QTE segments, it even has a standout action sequence. The Annoying Part is Ashley since she isn't really helpful or kinda useful, and is seen as a busybody. Leon, on the other hand, is the star of the show with his wisecracks to even these badass flips. It's the total package.
My History with RE4
I played this on the PS2 around 2010 and got everything unlocked from around mid 2011. It's such a great game, like I said, it has those annoying parts that can be speedrun through. It's a game that I played a lot when I was in high school lol.. I do remember after my high school graduation, I went full on RE4 mode lol..
Ohhh soo what about that RE4 Remake??
You could say that RE4, the 2005 release, is a good game, and I would agree wholeheartedly. But after playing the Re4 remake, it does change my whole view on the remakes. Though not saying the originals are bad. You gotta experience the old and the new.
First off, instead of being like Tank controls, it's modern Third-person controls, something we all want from the beginning, instead of pressing R1 and X to shoot and not move back. You can finally use the L2 and R2 triggers to aim and shoot, and move back when in action in the Remake.
Secondly, my favorite thing is that Ashley is not too dull. She will say a lot of good stuff that will have Leon use his wisecracks to sway Ashley's feelings, lol. Much as a brother and sister thing lol..
Lastly, they removed a couple of sections in the game that I found annoying in the original game. For example, they remove the Novistador section where you have to place two lights to a door to go inside the caves, removing the U3 boss, the out-of-place lava section, the Salazar statue chase sequence, and the Laser hallway scene QTE one. And yes, there is no QTE in the RE4 remake.
I am Glad they took these away since they were a pain in the ass and also so tedious that whenever I get into this section, it just feels like a bug is crawling and I have to get it off my back very quickly. I also have to kind of stomach my way through it as well.
Soo Yeah CapCom had the same problem as they did in the year 2000
Just as I said earlier, Resident Evil on Dreamcast and Gamecube were pretty much in a good spot in the early 2000s, while the younger bro the PS1 and its older brother, the PS2, had titles as experiments that were better or for the worst. 2003-2004 was the waiting period for the next big leap forward for the franchise.
RE5, Darkside Chronicles on the Wii, and Resident Evil: Revelations 1-2 were ok. Even though I enjoy Darkside Chronicles on the Wii, RE4 was a saving grace during that time period.
I would always consider RE4 the best game of the franchise in the 2010s.
When the big leap forward went and passed, Capcom kinda went into another of their dark period from 2011-2016
Capcom Second coming of Jesus in 2017
Just as Resident Evil entered the new millennium of the year 2000, 2017 was Capcom second coming of Jesus in the franchise.
RE7 would be considered the next big leap forward of the late 2010s "2017". forward with a sequel to RE8 "2021" and its remakes 2-4 "2019-2023", and also a follow-up with RE9 Reqium "2026".
Soo In the End
For RE4 Remake, I could say that the fans' reception was positive for this remake. Fans wanted more from Leon since the inception of RE2 Remake way back in 2019. RE3 remake was not a well-received title, and so 3 years later, with RE4 remake, it took everyone by surprise. It was that Damn good.
Overall, RE4 remake is a good game that I recommend everyone to play, and unless you have an extra 10 bucks or wait for a sale, play the ADA DLC campaign.
