A very good movie between two people hanging out
I finally found a movie that was deemed lost forever. A lost Japanese movie. A movie that I have been trying to find since 2016.
You may know or at least have seen an anime movie called 5 Centimeters per Second. It is a 2007 Japanese animated romantic drama film by Makoto Shinkai. The theme song at the end is called "One More Time, One More Chance" by Masayoshi Yamazaki.
It was a popular theme song from most of the mid-2000s and early 2010s. A ton of MV surrounding this song. But there is an MV that showed scenes that I thought were just in the MV only. I soon found out that it is tied to a movie of his. The movie is called The Moon and a Cabbage, a 1996 film starring Yamazaki himself.
However, back then, through many searches and torrents, there were no results on this movie.
Reviews of this lost film are not really much tbh lol.. except some say that the movie is ok or just have a complicated plot that goes nowhere lol.
A decade later, thanks to someone who has the link, I have finally found the movie and watched the whole thing from start to finish, and I would say that it’s ok, but the visuals and background are so minimalistic. It makes you wanna feel that way.
It makes you feel like It’s 1996; you have a Pentium machine. You can’t afford those fancy cell phones, but you have a home phone. Listening to music on a record player or a Sony Walkman. That sort of minimalistic.
The story surrounds the film of a musician named Hanabi who somewhat stopped his career and suddenly took over a cabbage farm. And suddenly a girl named Hibana shows up thanking him for the cash he handed to her, and hangs out with him.
I wasn’t sure if she was lost from the previous storm or something that happened that got her lost and never been found. Despite watching this film numerous times, by watching the diary monologue where Hinabi's friend was reading, I just don’t have a clear answer since the film doesn’t explain that way very clearly.
In the end, Hanabi was a lonely guy who needed a companion, and he felt bad about shooing her off. But after that music scene in the end, she comes through the door and does her dance while he sings.
Overall, it’s a good movie of two people hanging out lol… just hanging out.
For the singer himself. Masayoshi Yamazaki debuted in 1995 and has never stopped ever since. His first single was at the beginning of the movie. His song at the end was also a single for the following year in 1997. The song itself, as I said earlier, was the theme song for the 2007 film called Centimeters per Second.
I viewed him as one of the last or so blues singers that closed the 90s. Throughout the 1990s, Blues was about to be phased out but was viewed as a music genre that spoke about your problems and your sadness. Anime like Cowboy Bebop have blues in it as a theme of sorrow and sadness.
I remember “I wished I saved this a long time ago lol,” Where he visited the place where Blues all started, Louisiana. He visited here and sang his song in Japanese on a radio station.
